Regional Centre for Learners with Autistic Spectrum Disorders

Tutor guide for LSA job role

All the LSA's (Learning Support Assistants) who work for the Regional Centre for Learners with Autistic Spectrum Disorders are experienced in working with students with ASD in a college setting.

When a student requires support it could be for various reasons e.g. note taking, organisation and/or behaviour. The LSA is present to assist the learner with a variety of needs and although the LSA will be working one to one with the student, they may support others in the group try to avoid ‘drawing attention' to their learner if they feel self conscious about needing support.

It would be really helpful for students and LSA's to be notified of any changes to lessons (times, rooms etc) before hand so that we can be prepared and help the learner cope with these changes.

Learners with ASD often need to have a clear structure and information about what they will be doing and when.

Please note: The LSA is not completely responsible for the learner, it is essential that tutors play a key role in enabling the learner to achieve.

Often learners need clarification and behavioural guidance directly from the tutor - especially with regards to being late/shouting out in class and the issues that other students regularly have. Please try and have an open dialogue with any LSA working with your students, they are there to support you and the Learner.

Key Support needs:

  • Note taking
  • Maintaining appropriate behaviour
  • Time management
  • The organisation of notes/home work etc
  • Accompanying student on off site trips
  • Reassurance for anxiety
  • Off course support

The RUG Room (c1 of the Norwich building) is a facility designed to give student with ASD a place within the college. We offer a safe haven for the students along with a place that they can work, socialise and build friendships with learners that have similar needs. We also organise social events every term for the student to take part in.
